First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at California Employment Development Department.
Office Technician
It was a panel Interview. Mostly behavioral questions like how do you multi-task, what tools do you use, any teamwork or communication skills, and etc. They also included a printout of the questions for you to refer to which I found to be very helpful and not something I see done often.
- Can you provide examples or experiences of multitasking?
Employment Program Representative
It started with an online test and submitting a statement of qualifications. Then, there was an in-person interview with a panel of at least two people. After that, if it was a bilingual role, there was a language test. It wasn't a quick process, there were many initial steps that seemed designed to test if you could follow instructions.
- Be very familiar with the statement of duties, and what you submitted on statement of qualification.
- Be prepared to speak on past work experience and how you handled various work scenarios.
Office Technician
This was a limited term immediate hire position so the interview process was pretty quick and easy. We were asked to complete a Google Form as an initial screener with some questions about experience and qualifications. A few days after submitting the Google Form, I got an email saying I passed the initial screening and moved on to the phone interview. Phone interview was pretty easy too, just a few questions confirming experience and qualifications. After a few more days, I got a conditional offer depending on a background check.
- Can you tell me how many years you've been doing office/clerical work?
Disability Insurance Program Representative
For an entry level job, I thought the interview process was a bit much. You have to do a writing exercise before the interview. You're given a scenario and have 15 minutes to write a response. After that, I went to the interview. Three people interviewed me and asked five questions. When the interview was over, they asked if there was anything I wanted to say. I did, and the interview concluded. As I was leaving, one of the panelists spoke with me and told me what I should do differently next time. I interpreted this as the interviewer letting me know I wouldn't be selected this time.
- What would you do if a claimant was upset because their claim was denied?
- Was there anything else you wanted to add?
