First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at California Department of Food and Agriculture.
State Inspector
The interview process is very lengthy. After applying for government jobs, it takes a long time to get a response, and their hiring process, which includes interviewing and background checks, is also long. Be patient when applying, as it can take 3 to 5 months to get hired. The overall experience was good.
- Tell me about your inspection experience.
Information Technology Specialist
I was given 5 minutes to look over the interview questions before we started. It felt like they were hiring internally for this higher/technical role, which is common in state departments. I never got a response, even after checking in about my application status. If you're not already working for the state, applying for these jobs seems like a waste of time.
- Could you share some examples using the STAR method to answer the questions?
Environmental Scientist
We had an online interview via Teams, which lasted about an hour. It was a panel interview with three interviewers. They asked ten questions sequentially, and I could go back to previous questions if I needed to. After the questions, there was time for me to ask them questions.
- How do you contribute to your team's success?
- Can you detail your professional lab and field experience with scientific sampling and analytical testing?
- How does your education and professional history make you a perfect fit for this role?
Accountant Trainee
The interview was pretty straightforward. There was a nice panel interface for the oral part, and after that, I had to complete an Excel task within 30 minutes to show my basic Excel knowledge. The task itself wasn't too challenging.
- Can you elaborate on your proficiency with Excel?
