Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Caffè Nero.
Shift Leader
The interview felt pretty casual and moved at a quick pace. After it finished, they gave me a brief tour of the cafe. The staff seemed nice, making it a decent experience overall. It was a bit noisy because the cafe was busy, so it was tough to hear and concentrate, but that actually made it feel less intimidating.
- Can you describe your experience in a team leadership position and what your team members would say about your leadership?
Shift Leader
After applying online, I quickly got a phone call from a Sheffield branch. I had a successful 10-minute phone interview about why I wanted to work at Nero and my previous experience. They then arranged an in-person interview that lasted about 30 minutes. The interview started with a lot of 'ice-breaker' questions about what I did and my hobbies, which caught me a bit off guard. It felt a bit unnatural because the manager seemed to be strictly following a script. Then came some standard questions about my experience and competency-based questions. The manager made it clear I answered one question poorly, and there wasn't the collaborative approach I've seen in other interviews. She ended by saying, 'If you're successful we'll call you tomorrow and if you're not then you won't hear from us. That okay?' I have 2 years of food service experience and felt I answered most questions well, except possibly one. I also asked about how they handle busy periods, which might have been why I wasn't successful.
- Can you share an instance of handling a challenging customer?
- What is the accomplishment you are most proud of?
- In your opinion, what qualities define a good barista?
Shift Leader
About 3 days after applying, I had a phone chat. Then, another 3 days later, I was asked to come into the store. Upon arrival, they offered me a drink to make me feel more comfortable. We then moved to a seating area upstairs for the interview. The manager was really nice and knew a lot about the role, and seemed genuinely interested in me. Since I didn't have prior supervisor experience, he was really keen to hear about how I'd handle different situations. The whole thing took about half an hour.
- Tell me about your greatest accomplishment.
- Describe a situation where a colleague made an error and explain how you handled it.
