First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Burpee & Co..
Product Development
The interview process was slow, involving multiple interviews across various departments. The team seemed knowledgeable about home gardening and their specific roles. However, there appeared to be some disconnect between departments regarding their responsibilities, and the team seemed to be a bit older.
- Can you tell me about yourself and your career aspirations?
- Where do you see yourself heading in the future?
Merchandising Manager
This interview process was really exhausting, with 7 interviews spread over 5 weeks. It felt like they wanted me to think I had the job in the bag, only to add more steps later. They had me prepare and give a presentation. It was obvious they already had someone else in mind for the role, but they didn't even bother to tell me directly. Instead, they changed the job's conditions – suddenly there was much more travel required and the pay was reduced. I've never encountered anything like this, and honestly, I feel like I escaped a bad situation.
- Why are you the best candidate for this position?
Sales Manager
Applied online and got an immediate email to schedule a phone screen. I spoke with the HR Manager, who was very pleasant and knowledgeable. I was told they would move quickly. I followed up in two weeks and was told they needed more time due to the hiring manager traveling, etc. I reached out two weeks after that and after five days with no response. Unfortunately, this is too common for HR departments to just ignore candidates instead of sending a rejection.
- What is your current compensation?
Merchandising Manager
It was a very supportive process overall that lasted about two weeks. I felt really supported through the whole thing, from the initial phone screen to the final interview. They were really good about communicating and keeping me informed. Honestly, it was one of the best experiences I've had during my long job search.
- What are your best strategies for managing a remote team to maintain engagement and integrity?
