First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Burning Man.
Project Manager
The interview process was long, but ultimately worthwhile. It involved 5 separate interviews, each lasting 45 minutes and featuring two interviewers. The goal was to deeply understand potential hires and ensure they would align with the core values of Burning Man Project.
- How would you handle and reduce tension among employees?
Manager
I had an interview via Zoom with two people at once. It was a casual conversation and they asked me questions. The role wasn't super well-defined, but I gathered there would be tasks beyond the official job description, which is common in event production.
- Can you tell me about your management experience?
Government Affairs
The interview process was very long and involved meeting with a lot of people, with each subsequent stage having more interviewers. They took a very long time to respond via email, and their team wasn't very communicative. I dropped out because it was taking too long.
- Could you tell me about yourself?
- What is an example of a time you failed and what did you learn from it?
- What do you know about BM?
People Operations Associate Director
The hiring process was...really bad and filled with red flags. I was screened, then had a conversation about the process, then completed a TWO PAGE ESSAY, followed by a two-person interview, then another conversation about the process, then, I kid you not, SIX SETS OF INTERVIEWS with two employees each, then a conversation about the process, and finally an in-person interview. PHEW. As an HR professional, it was wild to be put through this, and it was a huge red flag that they were PROUD of this process. No organization is that "special" to put people through that. The in-person interview (which took me 2 hours each way to get to) was hurried, the CEO was not very engaged. It was about 20 minutes long, after they'd made me wait almost an hour and then they hurried me out for their next meeting. It seemed like it was merely a formality in some sense, and I found out 2 days later that they are "going in a different direction with the role". So....9 interviews, 2 pages of essays, and a whole day to go visit for 20 minutes and they apparently didn't even make a hire. They obviously knew they were "going in a different direction" long before I even went to the office. Really poor strategic planning to go through all that, and it shows a poor appreciation of candidates and potential employees. Handling of the communication was pretty unprofessional.
