First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at buildOn.
Executive Director
I had an initial phone screen with the VP of Development. Then, I was supposed to have a second interview with the same VP and the Chief Program Officer. However, the CPO had a conflict on the day of the interview and didn't show up. So, I ended up interviewing with just the VP again, which felt a bit repetitive since we had already spoken. I later sent a follow-up email with specific questions to the CPO, but I never received a response. It wasn't the best impression of their interview process. The organization seems good, but the overall interview experience was disheartening.
- How much experience do you have with fundraising?
- What are your thoughts on program management and strategy?
Vice President of Development
After several phone and video calls, I went to meet the CEO and CRO in person. It was during a vacation trip to NYC. We were supposed to meet outside on a really hot summer day. I waited for 10 minutes and texted the CRO about their arrival time. No response. I had to call the Executive Assistant to get an update, and she said they'd be there in 10-15 minutes. I found a place to chill and get an iced coffee. A whole hour after the scheduled time, the CEO and CRO showed up, with a half-hearted apology and no prior communication from them. I was already put off by the long wait, and then the CEO started asking questions about whether I was good enough for the job and the company. I'd already been through 3-4 interview rounds! Their arrogance, sense of entitlement, and just plain bad manners were a dealbreaker. When I emailed the CRO to pull my application, I didn't even get a reply.

Trek Program Supervisor
I sent in my resume and cover letter to the director. After about a week and a half with no word, I sent a follow-up. They scheduled an interview for later that week. The interview ended up being about an hour and a half, even though they said it was typically around 45 minutes. I thought it went really well and was feeling good about it. She mentioned she'd let me know if I made it to the next round. I didn't hear back, so I emailed to see if they needed anything else. Unfortunately, I never got a response after that, which was pretty disappointing and honestly upsetting because of the lack of communication.
- Can you describe your experience in management?
- How would you manage a dispersed global team?
Service Learning Program Coordinator
I had four interviews in total. First, a screening with HR. Then, a one-on-one. Finally, two panel interviews to wrap it up. The staff was really open and paid attention. The wait times between interviews were good.
