First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at BUILD.
Regional Executive Director
Started with an online application that needed a good amount of info but was pretty easy to use. Then, I had a 1-hour phone interview with HR. After that, I had a SKYPE call with the hiring manager. The whole thing felt pretty long, from when they first started looking at candidates to actually moving things along. The hiring manager mentioned he got 113 resumes, which I get, but their process was so drawn out that they might have missed out on good, qualified people who were looking at other jobs. They definitely have high expectations for who they hire and really want to vet candidates thoroughly, but they seem to mess it up and likely lose the exact people they're looking for because of it.
- How do you get others on board with change? Can you share your experience leading people through change?
- Tell me about your experience managing people through periods of change.
Program Manager
I was an external candidate, and the site seemed to be in a period of significant staffing changes and/or dealing with recent turnovers. The process involved 4 interviews in total. Since I wasn't located in Northern California, they were flexible and conducted interviews via Skype. I spoke with the Director of Talent/Human Capital, the Regional Director, and the Site Director, all separately over Skype. Then, I had several in-person interviews, including 3 panel interviews with program site staff (students, managers, and coordinators). There was also an observation period while students were in session. A homework assignment was part of the process too. The entire experience felt lengthy and drawn out, which I understand because they were looking for someone who could handle the job's pressures. They took a long time (2-3 weeks) after the interviews to decide on a hire.
- Can you share an instance where you managed a challenging student or child? What approaches did you take, and how was the situation resolved?
Manager
First, I got an email to set up a phone chat. The phone interview itself was pretty extensive, covering tough questions that really dug into any weak spots on my resume, not just surface-level stuff. After that, I had an in-person meeting with the hiring manager, followed by another in-person meeting with the rest of the team.
- Can you share your experience working with underserved youth?
Managing Director
The interview process was managed by several people, but overall it was well-coordinated. I initially interviewed for one role, but as they got to know me and their needs evolved, they asked if I was interested in a different position. HR was very supportive throughout and wished me luck.
- Can you describe your management style?
