First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Buena Vista University.
Education Coordinator
I talked with the director and regional education coordinator. They handed me a more detailed job description right before the interview and asked me specific questions about it.
- Can you introduce yourself?
Advisor
The committee was super friendly, down-to-earth, and honest. I was interviewed by a panel of three people. They asked me relevant questions and I went through about 5 rounds of questions from each of them. They offered me water and it was very low stress.
- How do you manage stress?
- Can you describe a stressful situation you've experienced?
- How has your past experience prepared you for this role?
Professor of Spanish
I had a very friendly and accommodating interview process. I flew in and got a rental car to get to Storm Lake. That evening, I had a casual dinner with the committee at a local place. The next day was packed with interviews with deans, the department chair, HR, the committee, and other faculty who wanted to meet me. I also taught a lower-level Spanish class. The university paid for everything: my flight, food, rental car, and hotel. A student gave me a campus tour, and I had lunch with some Spanish majors. They also arranged for a real estate agent to show me around town so I could get a feel for housing costs and the general area. The whole visit was super busy and went by fast, but the interviewers' friendliness really helped ease the stress.
- What's your strategy for teaching Spanish to a class that includes both heritage speakers and students at different proficiency levels?
Vice President for Student Affairs
AGB Search Consultants helped with recruiting and screening for this role. Communication with the consultants was great, and they provided good feedback. The initial interviews were conducted via Skype with the 6 finalists and the search committee. Then, the chosen candidates were brought to campus for further interviews. The institution kept us informed about the search progress.
- Can you tell me about a challenging student situation you've managed?
- How do you approach supervising employees?
