First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Broward County Public Schools.
Director of Compensation
I had one in-person panel interview. It was with about 4-5 people who currently work here, including the CHRO and the Chief of Finance. The questions they asked were pretty wide-ranging and also specific. They really focused on situational and behavioral questions.
- Can you detail a time when you were responsible for updating Job Families and their corresponding salary bands, including the approach taken, research performed, communication strategy, and planning involved?
Clinical Manager
It was a panel interview with really long questions shown on the screen. After they asked the questions, there was time for our questions. They didn't ask much about my background, mainly focused on the questions they presented.
- Please describe a situation using the STAR method where you exhibited leadership skills in a clinical environment.
- Can you share an example of a difficult clinical scenario you encountered and how you navigated it?
- How do you approach resolving disagreements among members of a healthcare team?
Web Designer
The process started with a lengthy and tiring profile creation with the school system, which is required to apply. About a week later, I was called for an interview. It was a panel with three people: my potential boss and two women. As a designer, I gave them copies of my designed resume, which they liked. One of the interviewers, however, seemed unimpressed with the designed resume. The interview itself was structured but focused on my work habits rather than web design. I was able to present some of my work samples about two-thirds into the interview. Unfortunately, my potential boss rudely cut short my presentation, mentioning we were running out of time, which I wasn't aware of beforehand. If I had known about the time limit, I would have managed my time better and his interruption would have felt less rude. My potential boss seemed more interested in whether I could manage people independently rather than my design skills or experience. The interview environment was serious, professional, and robotic, with no emotional expression or positive interaction. It didn't make the job appealing, and I suspected they had another candidate in mind and were interviewing me just to meet a quota. I wasn't called back, and I would have declined the offer anyway.
- Can you tell me about how you work?
- What are your general work processes?
- Could you handle people so that I wouldn't have to deal with it?
Teacher
It was pretty straight forward. They wanted to know about my teaching philosophy, if I'm good with kids, and what I specialize in. It felt like a typical interview. They advised to just relax and answer the questions, noting that it depends on who is interviewing you. They also said to smile and be positive, emphasizing that this industry needs more passionate people. They warned that if you're only there for a paycheck, you won't last long, as it's the kind of job where burnout can happen quickly.
- Could you share a bit about yourself?
- What's your approach to teaching?
- How do you interact with children?
