I went around the mall applying to places, Brookstone was one of them. I met the manager, asked for an application and dropped off my resume. The manager seemed pleased and told me about available positions. I returned later with the completed application and spoke with the manager again, scheduling an interview. My interview was with the 1st assistant manager. It lasted about an hour, with a lot of time spent discussing Brookstone and company policy, almost like an introduction to the company. He asked common retail questions like how I've handled upset customers. About 45 minutes in, he said I'd also interview with the store manager and that he fully recommended me. He finished by asking me to sell him a flashlight. The interview with the store manager was relaxed. He asked similar questions but went into more detail. It lasted about 90 minutes as we really connected and talked about the company. He mentioned a meeting with the regional manager the next day and would call with the job outcome. He called the next day offering $11.50 per hour. I asked for $12, he made a call, and later called back with the offer of $12 per hour, which I accepted.

The whole thing took about a week. There were two interviews. The first one was pretty quick and easy. The second one was a bit tougher since it was with the actual hiring manager (who showed up two hours late, by the way). They asked detailed questions about how you'd handle specific situations and about your sales background.

First there was an interview with the store manager, then one with the district manager. The in-person questions weren't too tough. There was also an online quiz that apparently evaluates you and provides answers to questions you didn't get. It's still weird to me how it guesses personality from general questions that seemed unrelated to the answers.
