First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Manager, Corporate Giving
The interview experience was really bad. The interviewer spent the whole time complaining and said they weren't legally obligated to answer any of my questions about the job. It was weird because they had been looking for a while for what seemed like a simple role and had put off fundraising tasks for two years.
- None, it was more of a rant and it was clear that the person taking the role would have impossible standards to meet and years worth of work to catch up on.
Visitor Services Assistant
The interview was short, under 15 minutes, and the managers were really nice! Just be polite and have some questions ready, and you'll do great. You don't need to know a lot about plants for this job since it's mostly about interacting with people.
- What is your experience with visitor services?
- How would you ensure visitors have a positive experience?
- Describe a time you had to deal with a challenging situation with a visitor.
Program Assistant
I had a short phone interview. The people I spoke with were friendly and put me at ease. I had to submit my cover letter and resume, along with two examples of lesson plans I had created. They seemed to really like my lesson plans and asked me to elaborate on them. They were also open to doing the interviews over the phone, which is great because many college students are still in school in April and can't easily travel to New York.
- Can you share an example of a challenge you encountered and how you resolved it?
- Could you explain the process you followed to create your lesson plan?
Accountant
First there was a phone chat with HR, and then we did some more interviews online and in person. It was a relaxed conversation about my background and how I work with the team.
- Can you share details about your professional background?
- Describe your approach to managing difficult circumstances.
