Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at BrightRoll.
Campaign Manager
This was a really thorough interview process, which was a bit surprising for what's listed as an entry-level role. It feels like they hold everyone to a high standard though. It usually starts with about two calls or video chats, and then you go in person for the final interviews. Part of the in-person part involves a test to check how well you understand math and use Excel.
- Tell me about your experience in the online media industry.
- How do you approach situations where your background might not directly align with the industry's specific needs?
Campaign Manager
The process started with a recruiter call that got rescheduled 3 times after it was supposed to start. They asked basic questions about my background and why I was interested in BrightRoll. After that, I had an on-site interview with 4 people, including the hiring manager. They all asked pretty much the same questions the recruiter did, plus some situational ones. The final step was a simple Excel test focusing on basic media math. I wasn't too interested in the role after the initial call and learning about the job and pay, and I think it showed during the on-site. A few days later, the recruiter let me know they went with another candidate.
- Can you share an instance where you made an error?
Campaign Manager
I had a phone interview with HR in their California office, then a second phone interview with the regional office in Toronto. Both happened within the same week. The first interview focused on skills-related questions, like defining CTR or pivot tables, basically asking me to be a dictionary. The interviewer judged me quickly and was rude. The second interview was with my potential manager, and he was discriminatory, assuming I was unqualified from the start, though he still continued with the 30-minute interview. Both phone interviews had really bad audio quality with echoes, making it hard to hear. It seemed like they were on speakerphone with others present. They don't do in-person interviews, but their screening questions are ridiculous and tedious, and they judge you on how confident/fast you answer.
- Could you define what a pivot table is and if you have experience using one? Additionally, can you outline the steps involved in creating a pivot table?
