Technical Coding

I started the interview process by logging into an online screening. This screening involved installing a browser extension that tracked browsing history and periodically took screenshots of my browser windows, which felt quite intrusive. Following this, I went through video interview questions and then a coding problem. After submitting my completed interview, the recruiter informed me I was rejected because I passed 9 out of 10 test cases and had opened browser tabs related to the problem. It was never mentioned that using the internet for research during the remote online test was prohibited, especially since they could monitor all resources used. I was told that in three months, Java would be supported for the test, but currently only JavaScript is available. I question the value of testing complex logic in JavaScript, believing a back-end language like Java would be more appropriate. This interview strategy seems outdated; instead of assessing a candidate's ability to learn and solve problems by passing most test cases, they focus on candidates who use incognito tabs, a separate computer for research, or those rare applicants experienced in both Java/Spring and Angular who can code perfectly in JavaScript without any external help. Furthermore, I never heard any mention of actual Java testing, which is frustrating. This entire experience felt thoughtless and careless, suggesting the company might not be very supportive of its employees. To succeed in this type of job, one would likely need to be an experienced JavaScript developer who anticipates the restriction on using internet resources.

This was a standard phone screen by a contracting agency for a position with Monsanto in the Saint Louis area. The interviewer was personable and pleasant, but had minimal knowledge of the specific skill-sets needed for the position. The normal shortcomings were evident as these types of interviews are rarely conducted by anyone with detailed knowledge or understanding of the real qualifications for the position.

Recruiter set up a phone interview. I spoke with two people on the phone for about an hour. The questions were really technical. Even though I don't think I did great, I got an offer two days later.
