Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at bp.
Senior Software Engineer
Overall it was a very thorough and good experience with 5 stages in total. The interviewers were really nice to talk to. The first stage was a coding test, followed by a tech review session, then a management interview, and finally a personality test.
- Could you please explain the code you submitted?
- Can you walk me through the code you've written?
Senior Software Engineer
A third party recruiter reached out, and things started off well with both them and the internal recruiter. The interview was scheduled quickly. It had three stages: First, a Coderpad DSA test with medium difficulty coding problems. Second, a technical interview focusing on system design, architecture, and programming concepts, also medium difficulty, which was an interesting discussion. Third, a Hiring Manager interview, which was supposedly a team fitment and cultural fit round. This round involved 50% architectural questions and 50% preset questions the HM read from a document. The first two rounds went really well with engaging conversations. The recruiter gave feedback quickly. However, in the third round, the interviewer seemed disinterested from the beginning and appeared to have already decided to reject me. Despite it being a cultural fit round, I was grilled on architectural questions, but I managed to answer them satisfactorily. Then, the interviewer read some team and culture fit questions, which I also answered. I later suspected the interviewer had personal bias. I wanted to provide feedback to the recruiter, but they ghosted me and didn't respond. It was a really pathetic experience overall. Company leadership should address this and take action against biased individuals and fix the hiring process.
- Discuss System Design, considering functional and non-functional requirements initially, and how to handle increasing complexity during the conversation.
- Solve a brain teaser.
- The interviewer was really amazing and kept the conversation engaging.
Software Developer
The first rounds were technical, involving a coding round with 3 questions focusing on arrays, strings, and DP. After clearing that, candidates moved to interviews, likely segregated into batches. There were two rounds: technical and HR. Although they didn't state a specific hiring number, out of 30 candidates, only 10 proceeded to the HR round, and ultimately 5 were hired. I'd say luck played a significant role.
- What are hashing and collisions?
- Can you solve the anagrams question in DSA?
- Tell me about DBMS.
