The hiring manager didn't seem engaged or excited. The questions were bland and lacked substance, not reflecting current market trends for on-site positions. It's obvious corporate is removed from the daily operations of on-site employees, and it shows. I dodged a bullet.

I met with a few of the Acquisitions Managers and the head of Acquisitions. Then they had me come back to do a case-study analysis, using data, info, and software programs similar to what I'd do day-to-day. After the case study, they emailed asking for writing samples, which I sent. Then I was asked back for more interviews and another case-study-type test, but this time for a Senior Analyst role in Portfolio Management, which I accepted.

I went into the office to meet with HR and the two hiring managers. HR asked basic questions about my prior work experience and academics. Then I met with the two hiring managers as a group. Both talked about the role and the requirements. They emphasized the ability to read financial statements of properties and business writing. They asked standard questions. A week later, I took a timed assessment test. I was emailed a pdf of financials and a word doc asking me to analyze the information and create an excel spreadsheet of the analysis. The following week, I interviewed with the heads of the asset management department one-on-one. They all asked the same questions, three times over. Basic interview questions. They emphasized the ability to read financial statements and business writing skills.

The interview process was pretty long. It started with an initial phone interview. After that, candidates had to do an analytical test about a real estate problem that involved some basic Excel skills. Then there was a group interview with some associates and a vice president. But then, after the interview, they threw in a surprise accounting skills test they hadn't mentioned before. Since I'm a finance major and hadn't taken an accounting class in the last two years, I didn't do great. I think that's why I didn't get the job, even though 3 out of the 4 rotations wouldn't have involved any accounting. I felt like they didn't really evaluate me properly.
