Sales Specialist
After submitting my application, the Deputy Manager emailed me for a group interview. They asked us to bring a song and prepare a presentation on its meaning and what to listen for in it, all in a company email. On the interview day, we could wear casual clothes. Store staff casually showed applicants around. There was a quick demonstration activity to keep us busy while waiting for the manager. They emphasized that the company avoids technical details about products because the founder had a bad experience. Then, we went to a small room with five other applicants to give our presentations using only the in-store technology, which had some issues. Everyone presented, but it was clear from the start and their technical comments that they weren't interested in facts. They wanted a 'used car salesman' pitch, full of fluff and no substance. Only two people mentioned instruments to listen for, and it seemed the Manager and Deputy liked the empty pitches of the first two. Then there was a quick Q&A with the Managers about part-time contract hours and informal chat about our song choices and how we guess music for product demos based on customers. They mentioned playing the Spice Girls if they don't like a customer, or if there's no specific request. After it finished, they said they play whatever music they want in the store and that we'd hear back the same day, which we did. If we passed, we'd have interviews early the next week.
- Please present a piece of music.
- Present a single piece of music and explain what it means to you and what to listen for.

I sent my resume straight to the HR Talent Recruiter. The store manager called me to confirm they got it. HR emailed me the next day to set up a phone interview, which I accepted. We had the phone interview the day after that, and it lasted about 45 minutes. After that went well, they scheduled me for an in-person interview with the store manager, which was two days later and lasted around 30 minutes. Once that was done, HR asked me how it went, and after I told them, they asked for my availability to speak with the Market Manager for the final interview. That call happened that same afternoon. I was on the phone with the Market Manager for about 30 minutes. When we finished, HR called me back to confirm they had spoken with the Market Manager and would get back to me the next day. The following day, HR called me to ask for my feedback on the interview and explain their decision.
- Can you share an instance where you had to manage a challenging employee?
- Given you'd be new to the store and leading experienced staff, how would you ensure they follow your instructions?
- What drives your motivation during your workday?
Sales Specialist
I was brought to the back and sat in a specific area for the interview. They asked me some basic questions about my past experience, and then presented me with hypothetical situations: 'how would you handle this situation?' and 'how would you handle that situation?'. They also asked about how I approach difficult customers. Finally, they informed me about a background check and when I might expect to hear back.
- What is your approach when a customer shows no interest in your offerings?
- Describe your strategy for engaging a difficult customer.
