First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Booking.com.
User Researcher
The typical hiring process involved several interviews and a practical assignment. After applying online, the recruitment moved quite swiftly. Although I ultimately decided against pursuing the role further, the experience itself was positive.
- Can you elaborate on your background and professional experiences?
UX Designer
I had interviews with some great people at Booking.com. First, there was an HR interview. Then, I interviewed with two managers, which was one of the hardest interviews I've ever experienced. Next, I had a case study review with two design managers and a designer who was watching. Finally, I had a competence and culture fit interview with a product manager and a design manager. I got an offer on July 6, 2022, and accepted it the next day. After that, I quit my job, expecting a promotion and a new role. My partner was also supposed to join me soon to start our new life in Amsterdam. However, just five days before I was supposed to start, Booking.com rescinded my job offer and canceled my relocation, citing changed business requirements. I and some friends who received similar offers experienced this. I reached out to the mobility team, HR, my manager, and the recruiter but received no response, explanation, or apology. I believe Booking.com should understand the consequences of their actions and the contract they sent me. I'm feeling upset, disappointed, and sad. If you value respect, humanity, and transparency, I suggest remembering my experience.
- Can you discuss your experience with stakeholder management?
- Describe a situation where you had to make a trade-off.
Senior User Experience Designer
1. You apply online. You can apply to different departments, but some processes will be paused until the first one's results are out. 2. You interview with 1 or 2 design managers. They ask about your experience, challenges, communication style, and design process. 3. There's a craft interview where you need to present 1 or 2 projects. You should be data-driven and user-centered. 4. You'll interview with a developer and a product manager. This part focuses on problem-solving, achievements, teamwork, and conflict resolution. A VERY important note: I applied to 3 departments 4 months ago. One team loved my craft interview, understanding how I solved problems and the case complexity. However, I was rejected in the fit interview. Another time, a different department rejected me for the craft interview, with the hiring manager saying the project lacked complexity for a Senior level. I can't believe there's no standard at a company like Booking! What happened to the third application? The position was filled! Twice!
- Can you share an instance where your teammates disagreed with you or said no?
- Describe a situation where you received feedback.
- What aspects of design do you find problematic?
