First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Booker.
Project Manager
First there was an HR interview to see if I qualified. The recruiter got the business reason for the hire and made sure I could back up my resume claims with examples. They also checked for cultural fit. Then I interviewed with the direct manager who checked my background and experience in more detail, and my personality fit. I also talked to the person I was replacing to see if I'd fit the internal culture and understand client issues. An SVP gave me background on the role's challenges. Finally, the CEO called me for a phone interview because they needed to hire quickly, to determine fit. He then called me back for a 45-minute session to prep me on the client and program issues. The offer was waiting when I got home. Salary and incentives were clear from the first HR call. It was a smooth and well-communicated process overall.
- How do you handle challenging clients?
- Can you tell me about your experience working with major clients?
- What's your background in managing distributed teams, both onshore and offshore?
Partnerships Manager
I was contacted by a recruiter, had a preliminary phone call and then met with the hiring manager. Both said I was a great fit for the role. But on the third round of interviews it became clear that each person I met with had a completely different idea of the position and had not communicated with each other; they were badly disorganized. Worse, one of the senior people used our interview to try and get information about previous employers because they were pitching them for business. Could be they brought me in just to get info for a pitch and waste my time? Another interviewer, who had no more than three years of experience and would have reported to the position I was applying for, acted like she was cross examining me in court and repeatedly put words in my mouth. Could be due to lack of experience but it again came across as overly aggressive and unprofessional. They are one of the least professional organizations I've ever interviewed with.
- What is your understanding of this role, and what are your aspirations for it?
- Are you planning to replicate your previous job's responsibilities in this role?
Sales Development Representative
There were 3 interviews total. The first one was a phone chat with the recruiter, asking general stuff about my last job, my sales background, what I knew about Booker and this role, and why I wanted to join. The second interview was with management, and it was pretty similar, focusing on my sales experience, but they weren't looking for someone too aggressive. The last interview was with the VP of sales, and they wanted to hear about my past sales roles, including my metrics and what I'd achieved.
- What makes you want to work for Booker?
- Can you describe your previous role?
QA Engineer
I applied online. The process involved two interviews. First, I spoke with HR, who was helpful and friendly. They asked some technical questions and assisted me with my responses. It was refreshing to interact with someone more focused on my ability to learn than on my current knowledge. The second interview was with the QA Manager, which took place a week after the initial HR call.
- They asked some technical questions in the first interview that weren't too difficult for a QA role and didn't disqualify me if I didn't know everything.
- I was able to get a second interview even though I didn't answer all the questions correctly.
