Product Coordinator
I applied online in December and was contacted for an interview in early January. The video interview with someone from Creative Services went okay, and then I got a 'test project' to do over the weekend, due the next Tuesday. The project was a big rebrand for a company, with 6-7 mockups of stuff like display pieces. These usually need CAD skills, which they said wasn't part of the job, but I did it anyway. Even though the project was way bigger than what a Product Coordinator would do, I spent days on my presentation and turned it in on time. They told me at the end the hiring would probably go till mid-January. I waited for confirmation my project was received, but got nothing. After two weeks, I messaged the interviewer to say I was still interested. It's been over a month and a half and I still haven't heard back. I get that I probably wasn't chosen, but the lack of response is a bummer. I put in a lot of time and effort on that project, so a quick email would've been nice. It felt unprofessional, and I'm going to remember to skip places that ask for free work. As a graphic designer, my portfolio shows what I can do, so a 'test project' seems unnecessary. I took the interviews seriously and expected the same respect back.
- Can you work full-time?
Production Designer
I applied online and then got an email the next day to schedule a phone interview. It was pretty standard. A few days later, they invited me for an in-person interview. Everyone was really nice, and I felt like it went well. We mostly talked about my print portfolio, and then they had me do a quick task in Illustrator to check my skills. They seemed happy with it and said they'd definitely call by the end of the week. But then a week and a half went by, and I just got a generic rejection email saying they went with someone else. It was a bit of a surprise since I thought it went so well, but that's how it goes.
- Can you include portfolio pieces that highlight a broad spectrum of your abilities?
- How important is showing versatility in your submitted work?
Web Content Administrator
Applied online through a job board for marketing/advertising, had to send a cover letter and resume. Got an email a few days later to set up a phone interview for later that week. Phone interview was standard, asking me to talk about myself and my experiences. After that, HR sent a culture/personality test the next day to do online. Completed the test on Friday, then heard back the following Tuesday to set up a face to face interview for that Friday. The in-person interview was also standard, mostly reiterating my skills and qualifications and how they would fit the job. It felt like it went really well, got compliments and good energy, thought I had the job. But surprisingly, got the usual 'Went with a more qualified candidate' email the next Tuesday. Seems like a great company with great people, just hard to tell what they're looking for.
- Be prepared to talk about your skills and experience multiple times throughout the interview process, and provide different qualifying answers at each stage, even if it feels repetitive.
Logistics Analyst
I had 2 interviews that were each about an hour, followed by a final interview. They were simple and straightforward meetings on Microsoft Teams. The people were nice, but there was no communication between the interviewers, which was a red flag. The final interview seemed to go well. I reached out to HR and the hiring manager afterwards to thank them and follow up, but I was ghosted by both. So, if you enjoy spending a few hours just to be ignored, this might be the place for you!
