Candidate interview experiences
First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at BNSF Railway.
Tech Trainee
The interview process has 3 rounds. First is a 30min screening call with the recruiter. Second, a 45min live coding session, mostly mid-level LeetCode questions. Third, a 45min system design session, focusing on problems related to railway systems.
- Can you share your experience with Java?
- What's your background with Angular?
- Tell me about your experience using Kafka.
Tech Trainee
It was a 2 round process. The first round was a coding DSA question, which was pretty easy, involving a Hash Set. The second round was more system design focused, with questions about OOP and designing 3 API endpoints. There were also some behavioral questions mixed in.
- Tell me about a time you didn't succeed.
Tech Trainee
I got sent an online assessment that had a medium LeetCode problem. I solved it in under 20 minutes and passed all test cases. Then I got rejected three weeks later. It felt like a complete waste of my time. I don't see the point of sending out online assessments if you're just going to reject people afterward.
- A medium-difficulty LeetCode question involving a greedy algorithm was asked.
