This interview process took about four months and had five stages: phone, video, and in-person interviews. I talked to almost the whole department, plus some leaders from other teams and people who would have reported to me. People I talked to brought up issues with their current workload and how things are organized. At first, the recruiter at BCI was good at getting back to me, but after the first month, they stopped responding much to my follow-ups. It felt like it took forever, and even though they told me I was one of two finalists, I heard nothing for over a month. I found out later they hired someone who had already started before I got any official word.

The interview started with a phone call, not Zoom, with a recruiter. They talked about the job details, checked my qualifications, and made sure we were on the same page about salary and timeline. Next, there's an in-person interview with a panel. Each person on the panel will ask individual questions about the job and my personality. It's a formal setting, but they did ask good questions about who I am and how I'd do the job.

I had a call with HR first, asking about why I want to work there, what pay I'm looking for, and if I need sponsorship. After that, they set up a Zoom meeting with two people, one from HR and one from the tech side. They asked a lot of technical questions about data analysis.

Behavioral Presentation

The recruiter was really great. She seemed to know the role and the company well. She spent a whole hour talking with me, answering my questions and giving me context before I interviewed with a team panel remotely. The panel interview didn't make me feel confident that the team, especially leadership, was on the same page about the kind of culture we need for innovation to thrive. This role is all about innovation, and it needs a collaborative, open environment, not a hierarchical or closed one. It seems like many companies that want to innovate jump into hiring leaders without doing the necessary internal groundwork first. My advice to big or established companies is to work with a strategy consultant before trying to hire people for innovation roles.
