First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Blis.
Python Developer
It was pretty straightforward. They're cool with you talking about mistakes and give you a chance to fix them. Most questions tie back to the job description, so you'll need solid Python knowledge and data scraping skills. Honesty is key; just be real about everything they ask, and it'll go smoothly.
- What basic data scrapping techniques are you familiar with?
- Can you explain your understanding of functions and any instances where you've utilized them in your projects?
Software Engineer
The first talks with the recruiter and the hiring manager went well, but I decided to withdraw my application after the technical interview. The only step left was an interview with the CTO. The technical interview was more like a rapid-fire quiz on obscure Java concepts that aren't really used and don't matter for the job. A lot of the questions were asked without any context, making them impossible to answer. I asked for clarification many times and often referred to past examples to compensate. Even though it was supposed to be just a technical interview, it was followed by behavioral questions, many of which suggested a big gap between the tech team and management. The interview lacked structure, and I feel they didn't learn much about my skills, nor did I learn much about the team or the role. The company culture also seemed lacking; my questions about it were answered with details about project work, and the highlight was "we can work from home." None of the interviewers seemed excited about the company or the work. The role itself seemed to imply they were looking for someone to take over the work of a whole team of contractors while also working on POCs, suggesting long, solitary hours. Overall, the company's culture didn't seem great, so if you're considering interviewing there, make sure to investigate it thoroughly.
- Could you tell me about your strengths and weaknesses?
- Describe the architecture of a recent project you worked on and what you would improve about it?
- How do you ensure the quality of the software you deliver?
Communications Manager
The interview process was supposed to be three interviews but it ended up being six rounds. It included a presentation and a final 'coffee meet' with Diane the CMO, even though she was already in four of the previous rounds. I was the last candidate, but I didn't get the job. Midway through, I heard that the CMO was indecisive and had trust issues because the previous communications manager left unexpectedly, which she took personally. I had already committed to the process by then, so I kept going even though I saw huge red flags. The CMO's inability to make a decision after three rounds showed a lack of leadership, and the face-to-face meeting felt almost paranoid, framed as casual but definitely not.
- Could you outline a comprehensive communications strategy for the UK, North America, and Asia-Pacific markets?
Marketing Manager
I applied online and a recruiter reached out within a week. We set up a phone screen for later that day because the recruiter is in Australia. She asked typical phone screen questions. It was interesting that she thought my resume's lack of exact employment dates was strange. I figured it was no big deal since US resumes and LinkedIn often just list the year, not the full date. For example, 'Oct 1 2015 to Oct 15 2016' is still a year of experience when written as '2015 - 2016'. Anyway, there's no one currently working with the VP of Marketing for the US, so this role would report to the VP and likely expand what can be done for Blis in the US market. I was told I'd hear back from the recruiter within a week. However, I got an automated rejection almost a month later. It doesn't bother me, as companies sometimes treat candidates poorly and then expect full access when they decide to hire. Good luck to whoever gets the job...if they can even hire someone!
