First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Blind Squirrel Games.
Quality Assurance Engineer
I got a call to set up an interview, and then had a Zoom interview. They asked about my experience with TestRail, but it felt like the interviewer wasn't really listening to my answers. I had scheduled the interview pretty far in advance, and I got the impression they'd already hired someone and were just being polite by not canceling, which was the vibe I got. They barely asked me any questions and within the first 5 minutes, they asked if I had any questions for them.
- Can you describe your experience using TestRail?
Level Designer
So the first step was a chat with the creative director. He wanted me to walk him through my work history, like where I've worked and what I did. Then we dove into how I come up with and build levels, and he asked some general design stuff, like which game genres are the trickiest for level design. He also asked about games with great level design and how I'd tweak those designs. It was a pretty chill conversation, all in all.
- Can you name a game that features excellent level design?
Artist
Typically an interview process for a senior level position. Talking with other art staff was positive and their questions and answers were honest and forthcoming. When talking to some of the production staff and upper management, it was clear their approach to game development was very different from the artists that help create content. At the end of the process I was offered the position at a very fair price, but when looking at their contract and wanting to have more dialogue about their over time policy, I was then ghosted about a week afterwards.
- Have you worked for a "support studio" in the past?
Producer
I had a phone interview with BSG. It was one of the worst and most unprofessional interviews I've ever had. It was a 30-min phone interview with the senior producer. The interviewer didn't try to build any rapport and asked closed yes-no questions. He told me he wasn't looking for someone creative but someone to keep the gears turning. I tried to give thoughtful responses and had questions ready based on my research. With only 2 minutes left, he told me he had a hard stop and to make my questions quick.
- Can you tell me why you are interested in BSG?
- What are your thoughts on being boots on the ground to keep the gears turning versus being creative?
