My interview process with Blavity for the People Ops role took about 3 weeks. I initially had an engaging call with the hiring manager, but as I progressed, organizational issues became apparent. Red flags included the hiring manager mentioning low morale, no mention of leadership involvement, broken internal processes, and clique environments. While these are common startup challenges, my values didn't align, and I decided not to proceed. For a company of ~45 employees, a 6-person People Ops team seemed large, indicating to me some broken internal processes. The hiring manager discussed basic concepts around 'getting things done' and 'following through' with small tasks, which seemed misaligned with the role's focus. When speaking with another hiring team member, instead of listing platforms to check familiarity, it would be better to understand that many HR/People Ops tools exist to address similar gaps and manual work. Tools can be learned, but passion for people is innate. Passion seemed absent from the hiring team, and I suspect deeper organizational structure issues need addressing before creating new positions for growth without clear direction.

The interview process was disorganized and frankly, a mess. It really showed me the company's culture. They were very disrespectful throughout the whole thing, especially with their poor communication. They're not Google, so they should learn to treat applicants with respect if they want good talent and a decent brand image. You can't just lead people on and then ghost them. They need to grow up and fix their recruitment process.

This process was really long and kind of sneaky and inconsiderate. They ask for free work and then ghost you after you submit it. Based on other reviews, it seems like they aren't actually hiring anyone but instead want free consulting advice from desperate candidates who are just going along with it because the job market is so hectic right now. It's a shame.

I had an easy time meeting with two people from upper management. They just wanted to learn about my past roles and experience. It was very conversational and not intimidating. You just have to sell yourself and explain why you're a great fit for this role.
