Quantitative Analyst
After applying, there was a Hirevue interview with three questions, which was non-technical and didn't include any coding. You need to know your resume really well. Then, there was another interview, which was technical, with one or more people from the company.
- What are your views on the future of quantitative finance and its impact on the global economy?
Quantitative Researcher
So after applying, the Scientific Active Equity team reached out to set up a phone interview. It was supposed to be two 30-minute chats but ended up being just one interview with both interviewers at the same time. They didn't really ask any competency questions, it was more about my background, skills, and how I could use them for their research. I also had to share my views on global equity markets and what's driving asset prices. It wasn't super tough, but I wasn't fully ready 'cause I thought it'd be more competency-based. They really seemed to care about what I could add to the team, looking for new ideas for their challenges. Programming and machine learning knowledge looked important. They also wanted me to be super specific and dive deep into the technical aspects of my past projects.
- Can you talk about your background and how you moved from math to finance? What was your dissertation about? Did it involve any mathematical modelling?
- What do you think drives global equity markets and asset prices?
- Could you outline an interesting scenario and provide a long/short recommendation for it?
Quantitative Researcher
For the internship, I spent a whole day at the San Francisco office. I was interviewing for 3 different roles and got to chat with other applicants for different positions between interviews. After the initial round, I got callbacks for 2 of the positions. Those 2 follow-up interviews were longer but not super technical. I did get a puzzle question from one interviewer, but otherwise, all questions were about my past experience and why I wanted to join the company.
- Given 25 horses and a racetrack that can only accommodate 5 horses at a time, what's the least number of races required to determine the top 3 horses?
