I interviewed with Birmingham City University and it was pretty disappointing. It started late without any apology, which was a bad sign. The panel seemed disengaged and abrupt, not very warm or inspiring. I was expecting a more in-depth discussion about the role and strategy as a senior candidate, but it felt very transactional. They didn't offer much insight and didn't seem to care about the candidate experience. It didn't really show off their culture or leadership well. I felt undervalued and was surprised by how poor the experience was, especially in today's competitive job market.

The interview followed a standard format. First, there was a 45-minute panel interview focusing on the core competencies required for the job. After that, a 20-30 minute teaching session was conducted with students, where staff also observed but it wasn't part of the panel interview itself. It seemed like the department was going through a restructure, as they were interviewing many more candidates than usual, not just a small shortlist.

It was a very formal interview process. They seemed to be looking for STAR responses, and it felt like we were being scored on each answer. While they weren't overly personable, they were still friendly and pleasant. It took a surprisingly long time for them to get back to us with a decision or any feedback.

The interview process was rough. The panel interview was toxic, with one person asking about publications already visible on Google Scholar. There was no technical support for the mock class, and one professor seemed unfamiliar with PowerPoint, wasting time. The research interview went well, with a friendly interviewer. However, another panel member was rude and seemed to target me, possibly due to my skin color. After the interview, the university offered me a job and then ghosted me for two weeks. When I followed up, they responded that they had decided not to hire me, without even informing me earlier. It felt like emotional torture, and I would advise black candidates to avoid the BCU engineering department.
