Software Engineer
Had a total of 3 rounds for the interview process. The first two were conducted over the phone, and the last one was onsite. All of the interviews were quite conversational, friendly, and felt like a two-way street. The onsite interviews were particularly welcoming and the most enjoyable I've experienced.
No confirmed questions were included in this interview report.
Manager
It was a standard interview cycle - I first talked to the people manager, then the hiring manager, and then a couple more people. They asked behavioral questions about my past experiences, which seemed fair. Then I went into the office.
- Can you tell me about a tradeoff you had to make?
UI Engineer
This was a really intense and kinda random interview process that took about 3.5 weeks. There were meetings on 4 different days, plus a technical challenge. First, I had a phone interview with HR and a Senior Developer, which was about 30 mins and part technical, part personal. It was nice. Second, I got a technical challenge that took a week. I liked doing it and felt like I showed my skills, but later found out the CEO doesn't even see these, which was a bummer. Third, I had a Skype interview with all the dev managers, which was technical and kinda personal. It went well. Fourth, I had a 'Family Interview' with the whole dev team, which lasted an hour and was fun but challenging. I felt really good about the team. Fifth, I met the Senior UX guy, who seemed to really need help as he was the only designer. This lasted about 45 mins and went well. Sixth, I was invited back for the final interviews, meeting the non-dev team and the CEO. The night before, I was asked to bring my NDA from my previous job, which made me super nervous because that company had layoffs and I wasn't sure if I signed one. I had a rough night. I was really nervous during this interview. Seventh, I met the CEO. He asked how I got where I am and then fired off about 25 questions super fast. I struggled because I was so nervous and even rambled. He mentioned not seeing my technical challenge and thought I did QA. He also said PHP is dead. He didn't seem to want to shake my hand. It felt unnatural and rushed. I wish I met him the same day I met the dev team. Eighth, I met the rest of the non-dev team. I wasn't feeling great after the CEO interview, but they made me feel comfortable with jokes. However, I felt like I didn't come across as knowledgeable in UI Design and rambled again. They asked similar questions. After sending my NDA the next day, HR told me they went with someone else who seemed more technical, but she couldn't say exactly what they had that I didn't. Overall, the team seems solid, but the CEO is a bit harsh and didn't seem engaged. The process could be shorter and clearer, maybe not everyone needs to meet every candidate, especially the CEO. They should ask for the NDA before the technical challenge.
- What would the person that dislikes you the most say about you?
- How did you reach your current position?
- Did you perform Quality Assurance tasks?
Product Manager
My first interview was unexpectedly with the hiring manager. I felt it went well, and he mentioned scheduling a second interview before we even finished the call. The second interview was going to be a presentation about a hypothetical project called McSpaghetti, based on a concept from my boss. He sent over the required structure for the presentation. I dedicated 8-10 hours to it, but then I was ghosted. I sent a few emails and got no response. It was a really bad experience. I wish he had just been upfront. I can handle bad news, but I don't want my time wasted.
- Develop a strategy to validate or invalidate the feasibility of the McSpaghetti project.
