Geoscientist
After submitting your online application, you'll take a numerical online test. Then, there's a technical interview at their office and a full day assessment centre in Reading. The technical interview involves two geoscientists and you. You'll be given three rocks to identify and answer questions about, a seismic line to interpret, and they'll go through your CV and ask why you're interested in BG. The assessment centre starts with dinner the evening before, with 12 potential graduates. The next day includes an in-tray exercise, a 10-minute presentation about your thesis using a flip-chart, building a paper tower in a group to hold a cup of water, an HR interview, building a car in a group to transport an egg, and a group negotiation exercise. Be super social, be engaged in all activities all the time. All your steps will be monitored.
- Can you identify these three rocks?
- What is your interpretation of this seismic line?
- Why did you choose BG?
Project Analyst
So I applied for a role that seemed like it was for BG Group-Bolivia, but CONTEC, another company, was handling part of the hiring and they'd be the ones to send the invoice, making it seem like an external consulting gig. The process started on Day 1 with a psychometric test that ran from 8:30 AM to about 11:00 AM. After that, I had an interview with CONTEC, who apparently are the ones that screen candidates before they even get to interview with the main company. They mentioned that only suitable candidates get to interview with BG. Then, three days later, on Day 2, I got a call around 6 PM saying I'd passed and was invited for an interview with BG-Bolivia the next day, Day 3, at their premises at 3 PM. On the actual interview day, which was the fourth day of the process, I got there 5 minutes early and was the first one. The people interviewing me were super nice and professional. They had this standard questionnaire for BG, and the two people interviewing me were the hiring manager and someone from HR. The place was comfortable, and the hiring manager actually walked me through the job details at the start. Oh, and the whole thing was in Spanish, so I'm translating everything now!
- Could you give examples of how you approach problem-solving?
- Tell me about your strengths.
- What are your weaknesses?
Interface Manager
I received a call from a headhunter about a contract role for a significant day-rate at a well-established LNG company. Although I wasn't actively seeking a new position, I decided to explore the opportunity. The office was in a modern building downtown on the 34th floor, which was impressive. I met with the project director and an HR representative; they were both pleasant and appeared keen on hiring me. The project director inquired about my background, and I detailed my responsibilities in past projects. When it became apparent that my experience didn't fully align with their requirements, I thought the process was over. However, they scheduled a second interview with the engineering manager based in the UK. I had a phone conversation with him, and I felt the interview went well. A few days later, they requested a third interview, which I attended. I met with another engineering manager, and we connected really well. By the end of this meeting, it was clear that an offer was forthcoming.
- Given my experience level, shouldn't we be looking to hire someone with more experience?
Rotational Development Program
I went to an info session at my school and then HR invited me to dinner with two recruiters. The next day was the interview. The company really emphasizes safety, their values, and culture. They seem to want really qualified people. Having a Master's or MBA would be good, and an internship with them or a similar F500 energy company would also help.
- Tell me about the biggest challenge you have faced.
- Tell me about a time you worked with a group.
- Can you tell me about your resume?
