I had an interview with an EM right away, even though the recruiter's email suggested an introductory chat. The interviewer didn't ask about my experience. Instead, they spent 15 minutes talking about themselves before asking some general questions. Compensation wasn't discussed at all, and it wasn't in the job posting, which is illegal in NY. The recruiter was also really cold and seemed incompetent. Overall, it was a bad experience.

After applying, I had a recruiter screen, then a manager screen. Then I went for an in-person onsite in their New York office. The onsite had four rounds: coding, system design, another manager chat, and a behavioral one. It was a bummer I didn't get an offer. The interviews weren't a complete disaster, but I could have definitely done better in some areas, like understanding the scaling hints in the system design round.

Confirmed questions3 questions
  • The coding part was practical, keeping in mind the industry the company is in.
  • Manager and behavioral questions were pretty standard, like asking about times you had disagreements or made mistakes in your career.
  • Tell me about scaling in the system design round.

The recruitment process had some delays in getting back to me. It included an initial call with an engineering manager, then a system design interview, and finally two Ruby pair programming sessions. Knowing Ruby is pretty crucial, even though they might say otherwise. A lot of the pair programming seemed to be about how well I could search for syntax online. Most of the people I interacted with were nice, but one interviewer in the Ruby rounds made fun of me for not knowing the language, which was upsetting.
