Had a quick pre-screening phone chat with the Talent Acquisition person. They then set up an in-person interview pretty fast. When I got there, I met with people who weren't on the original agenda, which was a bummer because I like to know who I'll be talking to so I can prep. They mentioned things move fast and they'd be in touch. They weren't. I followed up with one of the interviewers about the job status, and the TA person finally emailed back saying, 'Sorry, even though you're well qualified, we've gone with someone else.'

I had a phone call with the receptionist/HR assistant, who was really nice. After that, they asked me to come in for a face-to-face interview. There, I met with the HR rep, the department director, a department manager, and then the person who was currently in the role. Following that, I was asked to do a quick skills assessment, which took over 3 hours in the office. The questions during the interview were mostly situational. For the skills assessment, I had 10 minutes to create an org chart in Powerpoint and add some graphics, and also to jazz up and edit a 2-page handout. I felt a bit rushed trying to do both in just ten minutes. Later that evening, I had to do an online personality assessment. The first part asked about my own traits, where I picked from about 50 character options. The second part asked what I thought others thought of me, using the same 50 traits. I didn't hear back from the recruiter for a few weeks, and when I did, they said they were looking for someone to start immediately, which felt like an excuse. It seems like a good company with lots of potential. I heard great things about how the director empowers her staff and department.

I applied online and the next day HR requested a phone interview. I set up a call with the hiring manager and one other person. The manager told me about the team, the reason for the job opening, and the work environment, and asked a few questions about my skills. Then, they asked me to come in for an onsite interview. The onsite was scheduled for early the next week and involved two meetings. The first was with the hiring manager (who was remote) and another engineer I met before. We waited for the hiring manager to call, and got to know each other better. When the manager didn't call, the engineer called him. After that, there were about 30-40 minutes of questions to check my knowledge and how I think. The second round was with me and the other team members. They asked about my experience with VOIP and SQL and we got to know each other.

A recruiter reached out on LinkedIn about the position and the company. They prepped me for the first call, a phone interview with HR, which went well. The next interview was with the VP of Sales, and I was able to respond to their timeline even while working another intense job. This interview was a long day trip to Minneapolis, which involved a flight with a layover each way. The VP of Sales liked me and wanted me to fly to Boston 4 days later to meet the SVP of the US and VP of Marketing. I had to fly out Sunday for a Monday morning start. The company booked me on connecting flights which made the trip over 6 hours, though there were non-stop flights available. I was booked into a nice hotel though. The next day started with 2 individual interviews with potential colleagues, followed by a team interview with the 2 VPs. They asked a lot of questions and seemed to have another agenda. I was prepared and gave a detailed answer when asked to explain what the company does, which they found impressive. However, there was a quirky vibe I couldn't shake. A few days later, the recruiter called to say I wasn't getting an offer due to "fit", which was the only reason given. The final issue was when my travel expenses were shorted $60, and HR never responded to my email about it, showing disregard for my time and money. I'm glad I don't work there.
