I got a writing assignment that took two hours. It was fun and let me show off my writing. Then I interviewed with an Account Executive. It was a really nice, conversational chat. I didn't make it past the last round, which surprised me because I thought I did great. The whole process was fast and they were good at communicating, so big ups to HR for being so responsive! The reference check part felt a bit old-fashioned though, especially for an intern role.

Applied online and sent in a cover letter and writing sample. Got an email from an account coordinator in their New York office asking me to do a writing test. The test was pretty straightforward; I was given a prompt and then wrote a mock memo. A few days later, they asked me to do a phone interview. The interview was quite relaxed, and the two people interviewing me seemed very pleasant. They inquired about my news sources, any previous experience pitching to reporters, and how I'd manage conflicting priorities. After the interview, I was told I'd hear back within a week about the internship. It's been a couple of weeks, and I haven't heard anything. It would have been considerate to get a courtesy email letting me know they weren't proceeding with my application.

It was pretty average. There were two interviewers, and they stuck to a predetermined list of questions. It felt a bit disorganized, like they hadn't planned who would ask what or how to handle my questions. The interaction was quite robotic, with little back-and-forth. One interviewer was dressed up for an office setting, while the other appeared to be in their bedroom, looking like they'd just come from running errands. They initially said I'd hear back by September 6th, but I didn't get a response until September 10th, with a poorly written rejection email that just stated the 'internship program is now closed' instead of explicitly saying I didn't get the position.
