Benefits Outreach Specialist
I had a phone chat that made me feel like I really wanted to join BDT. The main thing was showing I was keen to grow professionally in a non-profit. Then, I had an in-person meeting with two people who nailed my technical questions. They were also super open about the good stuff about working at BDT and the not-so-great parts of a call center, which was helpful since I'd never done that before. I also got to listen in on a call and chat with someone currently in a BOS role, and they were really nice. Just make sure to show you're into it and excited, 'cause they're looking for people who are passionate and know their stuff.

Web Developer
The recruiter reached out on LinkedIn. We had an initial phone call. Then I got a take-home test to build a landing page from scratch using a Figma UI, and I had a week to do it. I tried to get more info from the provided email but got no response, so I learned TailwindCSS on the fly for the test and completed it on time. I was supposed to get feedback but didn't hear back. I only got an apology and an explanation after I mentioned I'd share my experience on Glassdoor. Apparently, the recruiter was on PTO, and they said the code was 'inadequate' and they chose someone else. Benefit Data Trust seems to struggle with assessing developer skills and communicating with applicants. Tech candidates, be careful!

Benefits Outreach Specialist
BDT mostly uses Craigslist for job postings. Response times can vary; some get offers quickly, while others wait a few days. They often hire groups to fill positions due to frequent departures or terminations. The interview is thorough and assesses communication skills and ability to meet job requirements. Given the low pay, the job isn't overly challenging. Be ready for simple questions and provide hypothetical examples of client interactions, particularly with elderly or difficult individuals. Maintaining extreme political correctness is crucial, as BDT emphasizes it heavily. Since the role involves applying people to government programs via phone, knowledge of prescription assistance, Liheap, Food Stamps, and the rebate program is beneficial. Prior non-profit experience can give you an advantage.
- How would you handle interactions with diverse clients, including elderly ones?
Policy Director
After being contacted by the organization, I went through an initial exploratory phone call with HR. This was followed by a 60-minute in-person interview and a short listening session with someone from the call center. I had to travel a few hours for the interview, and unfortunately, the organization doesn't cover travel costs. I was disappointed by this, especially since they reached out to me. The interview felt a bit strange; the interviewers seemed hesitant to share too much because of their reporting structure. They didn't seem very enthusiastic or like they'd thoroughly read my resume, as their questions were quite technical instead of focusing on getting to know me. Even though the interview was around lunchtime, they didn't offer to have lunch with me or include me with any staff, which would have been a nice gesture for someone who traveled so far at their invitation. Only one person replied to my thank you email after the interview.
