Full Stack Engineer
Great process overall. It kicked off with a chat with a really nice technical recruiter about culture fit. Then, I interviewed with the hiring manager for a behavioral and some basic technical questions. Next up was a backend-focused interview where we discussed databases, data pipelines, and I got asked an API and query question (how to fetch records from a many-to-many setup). The last interview was front-end, where I had to mock up React components with state management for a system shown in a UI wireframe, and identify the necessary APIs to get the data. Sadly, I didn't get an offer. The recruiter's feedback pointed to the backend query question as the weak spot, which I also felt. It's a bummer because I think this would've been a fantastic place to work, and I just messed up on that one question.
- Can you explain the API and query needed to get records from a many-to-many relationship?
- How would you design the React components, manage state, and what APIs would you use to build a system based on this wireframe?
Full Stack Developer
First, they'll give you a call for some general questions. After that, there's an algorithmic HackerRank challenge focused on strings. You have one hour to complete it and pass all the extra test cases to move forward.
- Can you solve a string manipulation problem on HackerRank?
Senior Full Stack Engineer
A BenchSci recruiter reached out. I received a take-home coding challenge via HackerRank, which I completed on a Sunday. Shortly after submitting, I was invited to a design and architecture interview with a tech lead. The next day, the recruiter scheduled two one-hour interviews: one focused on backend development (designing a full-function API) and the other on frontend development (explaining state management and data flow). Following these, I was asked to book a final meeting with a director. The day after that, the recruiter informed me that they would not be proceeding with my application for the Senior Full Stack Engineer role, and surprisingly, offered feedback on their decision. I accepted the feedback and scheduled a 15-minute call for the following day.
- What exactly is state in a frontend framework, and how would you handle user authentication and authorization within the system?
- What is state in a frontend framework? How would you manage users authentication and authorization in the system?
