First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at BECU.
Software Engineer
It was a good experience with competitive questions that were targeted from my resume. The interview process went well, and the HR was very quick and cooperative from the interview to onboarding.
- Can you explain the basics of avionics systems?
Senior Software Engineer
So BECU uses Karat for their initial technical interviews. Karat can be hit or miss, but one thing is for sure: they don't give you enough time to finish all the questions and problems. On the plus side, Karat offers a second interview, no questions asked. I was really looking forward to joining BECU. I'm a good engineer, but I'm not great at solving problems on the spot under tight deadlines. Everything else I'm awesome at. It's taken me years to reach Senior Software Engineer status at my current job, and I tackle a lot of complex issues. However, I've never encountered a situation in my career where I had to solve complicated, often math-heavy problems in just 30 minutes. The industry's obsession with LeetCode and HackerRank-style interviews is a real shame and disqualifies some truly amazing people.
- Given a scenario, perform a chart analysis to diagnose potential issues.
- Write pseudo-code for a REST API design based on a given scenario.
- Solve a variety of LeetCode/HackerRank style problems.
Software Engineer
I had an interview through the KARAT system, which is a third-party platform. The interviewer joined the call late, and their system froze. The interviewer seemed to be an automation engineer with no programming experience and was possibly reading from a script, as they lacked knowledge of programming languages. They frequently interrupted me and didn't allow me to finish my sentences. I feel KARAT doesn't let candidates showcase their abilities. I recommend avoiding KARAT interviews and seeking interviews with actual software engineers instead.
