Behavioral Technical Coding

I applied online for a Software Engineer role at Bectran in March 2025, and the whole thing took about 2-3 weeks. The job was mainly Java-focused, but said ML and data science knowledge would be a plus. First up was a phone screen about my background, what I'm looking for, and pay. Then came a Java coding test I had to finish in 12 hours; it was pretty standard easy-to-medium stuff if you've practiced. After that, it got a bit weird. The next round involved a hard LeetCode problem in Python plus 30 multiple-choice questions on ML, Python, data science, and math, with really similar options which wasn't clear from the job description that mostly talked about Java. If I passed that, I had a technical interview with Sajal, who seemed to need someone for his team. It was supposed to be 30 minutes and wasn't great. He asked the usual 'tell me about yourself' and 'Java experience' questions. He mentioned Java and SQL were the only requirements, which was odd given the job ad mentioned Hibernate, Spring MVC, jQuery, microservices, Python, and ML/data science. I had to screen share and solve a medium LeetCode problem about pages and user visits, writing pseudocode first, then the actual code in Java. He then asked how I'd do it without data structures, probably checking space optimization. At the end, he said since it's a small company, we're expected to learn new tech on our own without asking much, even with the low pay. The process was quick, but the interview vibe felt really dependent on the interviewer. Honestly, if you're Desi, I'd probably avoid this place. Sajal was yawning and the interview was in a loud, open area. Hayden, though, was super professional and helpful during the initial screening. Given all this, the negative Glassdoor reviews made sense. The whole experience felt unprofessional, especially Sajal's interview.

The interview process started with three rounds focusing on Java and Python coding skills. The final stage was a panel interview including a manager, a software developer, and a director. It was one of the worst experiences I’ve ever had. They seemed unsure of what they were looking for. Throughout the interview, the manager was disengaged, constantly checking his phone, yawning, and making sarcastic remarks. There was no clear structure. It’s unbelievable how people in high positions can act so unprofessionally. If they weren’t interested in hiring me, they could have just sent a rejection email. Interviewing me in such an uninterested manner was very unprofessional. I cannot recommend this company to anyone seeking a good career start.

So for the software engineer role, there are typically five stages. First, we have a screening call where HR will chat with you about your background and if you're interested in the role. Then, there's a technical phone screen, where we'll give you some coding challenges to see how you do. After that, you'll get a coding assignment to see if you can solve problems on your own. The final stage is the onsite interviews, which will have multiple people from the team interviewing you to check out your technical skills, if you'd fit in with the team culture, and your communication skills.

  • Tell me about a difficult technical issue you faced in past projects and how you resolved it.
