Underwriting Assistant
I had an interview with the team lead and department head. The team lead was nice, but the department head was super condescending the whole time. The team lead asked normal questions, but the department head kept cutting in to say I was wrong, even when I was right. The team lead actually had to correct them. The department head also said they wouldn't train me on something if I wasn't good at it, even though the recruiter said they would. Then, when I asked about the next steps, they just said they had another interview in 10 minutes. It felt really unwelcoming, so I decided not to continue with the process.
- What's a negative assumption people might make about you based on a first impression walking down the hall?
Assistant Underwriter
The interview process was split into two parts. First, there was a 1-hour virtual interview. Following that, a 4-hour virtual assessment center was conducted. After that, an offer was extended. Communication was prompt, which was appreciated. There were a couple of minor technical glitches, but they weren't a major problem.
- Can you describe your experience working with qualitative and quantitative data?
- Tell me about a time you faced conflict within a group project and how you resolved it.

Recruitments are managed by UK teams who do an initial screening, followed by a phone interview if the candidate is selected. The second stage was the manager interview. After this interview, things started to go wrong: 1) No response to the candidate's thank-you email, 2) no feedback within the announced deadlines (minimum 10 days), which are already quite long in a tight market, 3) a generic email sent to the candidate to inform them of the recruiter's decision. The problem is that this email is not personalized. Also, the email is sent by teams based in the US with whom the candidate has never been in contact: assuming the candidate wants more constructive or detailed feedback, their contact person would not be able to provide it anyway.
- What are your strengths?
- What are your weaknesses?
- Why are you the right fit for this role?
Office Administrator
Even though I previously worked for Beazley before the pandemic, I had a negative interview experience. My recruiter told me Beazley wanted me back for this role, full-time, and gave me a salary range. I assumed they were specifically asking me back, so I was excited. My recruiter then told me they were just setting up a phone conversation. The following week, I had a 15-minute conversation with an awkward HR person. None of the people I had previously worked with were on the call. It was a behavioral interview, and I was caught off guard by the questions about my greatest achievement and its opposite. It was a weird conversation, and this person decided my fate for a job I'd held before. My recruiter was upset because the interview was not presented to her as a phone screen. She also thought they were asking me back. Regardless, I'm not impressed and won't try to bring my talents back.
- Tell me about your greatest achievement.
- What is the opposite of your greatest achievement?
- How do you handle conflicting priorities?
