First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Barrett Business Services.
Integration Engineer
They were super communicative and really zeroed in on if you'd be a good cultural fit, more than testing your technical chops. Started with a recruiter chat, then a hiring manager chat focusing on behavioral stuff, and finally a long ~2.5 hour on-site panel. The whole dev team was there and they all threw in their technical questions, but none were too tough.
- How would you filter query results?
- What's your approach to project estimation?
- How can you retrieve the second-highest salary from the employee table?
Human Resource Consultant
The hiring process took a while, with involvement from both the main recruiter and the local team. It had several steps, starting with general questions, then moving to specific job-related inquiries, and finally returning to broader questions about team dynamics. I also completed an assessment to check my expertise in the field. While it moved slower than some might expect, it felt smooth since I wasn't in a hurry. The team was great, always professional, and had a pretty relaxed vibe.
- Tell me about how you've managed different scenarios previously.
- How do you interact with your colleagues in a team setting?
- Can you demonstrate your understanding of the core responsibilities for this role?
Financial Analyst
I initially met with two supervisors who made a good impression. Then I interviewed with their boss. I was expecting him to be tough, but he turned out to be surprisingly pleasant. However, he quickly became confrontational, telling me to 'cut the crap' about why I left my last job after only six months. He threatened to call my old supervisor to check my story and accused me of not getting promoted because my resume lacked 'Level I or Level II' identifiers. I explained that my former employer didn't use such designations and had reduced middle management. He then stated that if I wanted an easy job, there were easier ones out there, which I found offensive given my work ethic. I left feeling angry and made sure he knew I had three other interviews that day and would be fine.
- I need your old supervisor's contact info to confirm your story.
- Give me the real reasons, not just what you'd say in an interview.
- This role is challenging; if you're seeking something easy, other jobs might be a better fit.
HR Consultant
I had a phone interview with the recruiter first. She was super nice and kept me in the loop. Then, I had my first in-person interview with three managers, who were all pretty cool and friendly. After that, I had a second in-person interview with the Area Manager and the Business Partner. The Area Manager was really rude, like, didn't even look up when talking to me. The Business Partner, though, was nice.
- Can you share your past experiences?
- What would you do if X happened?
- What would you do in situation Y?
