First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Barrel.
Executive Assistant
I went through a practical assessment which was tough but interesting. I had to handle a mock scenario, organizing an executive’s schedule with competing priorities and draft a professional email from a vague request. This checked my problem-solving and attention to detail. It took about an hour. Then, I had a final interview with the executive. It was a mix of professional and personality questions, checking our chemistry and how we'd work together. We talked about work styles, handling stress, and what I look for in a job. They said they like proactive communication and someone who can anticipate needs. I got an offer! The whole thing took about two weeks. It was rigorous, but I liked how each part showed different skills. EA roles need organization, adaptability, and trust, and they wanted someone for a fast-paced job. It boosted my confidence and made me excited for the role.
- Can you demonstrate your use of software tools or processes for efficiency?
Digital
The agency found my info and reached out first, so we did a normal phone screen. Then, I got a bunch of tests I'd never seen before, one was pretty invasive. The in-person interview was standard, but the vibe was very male-dominated. After that, I found out I had more online application work to do, which I missed. I sent it in and got an automated reply with a link to a final timed test. The time limit was weird. The whole process requirements didn't match the job role and pay. I emailed my contact after finishing everything and heard nothing back.
- What were the questions like?
Project Manager
Had an initial call with the co-founder, then a Skype call with the co-founder and Technical Director. They asked about my experience in every single position I've had since high school, plus what my experience was in high school, which I'm not sure was relevant. They also asked for the positive and negative feedback every one of my bosses would give about my performance, their titles, and my relationship with them. This part took about 15-20 minutes of the 1.5-hour Skype call. Near the end, there was an oral exam with 10-15 questions needing deep thought and on-the-spot calculations, which would have been fine if I had any warning.
- Tell me about the positive and negative feedback you've received from all your managers.
- What would each of your bosses say about you, both good and bad?
- For each of your former managers, what was their title and your relationship with them?
Visual Designer
The interview process was pretty quick. It started with some general questions, then I had to go through my portfolio and explain my projects.
- Why did you choose to become a designer?
- What's your biggest weakness as a designer?
- Can you describe your design process?
