First-hand accounts from people who interviewed at Barnes & Noble.
Customer Service Representative
I had a quick screening call, and then about a week later, I went in for an in-person interview. It mostly involved questions about my past jobs and some hypothetical situations related to this position. I heard back after 3 days, but unfortunately, I didn't get the job. They wished me good luck though!
- Can you discuss your experience in previous roles?
- Do you have any general questions about your fit for this role?
Customer Service Associate
The interview process was pretty typical overall. It started with a virtual interview with the recruiter, which was just a basic "get to know you" and a discussion about my work history. By the end of that call, we were already setting up an in-person interview with the head of the customer service team for the following week. The in-person interview took place at their office, and the questions were pretty standard for the role, making the process straightforward and easy. During the interview, they mentioned they’d be making a decision by the end of the following week and implied they would inform me either way. However, it's now been weeks since that interview, and I haven't heard anything from them. I’m less upset about not getting the job than I am about not being informed either way. I took time out of my day to attend the interview, and it feels like they didn’t even acknowledge that effort. I understand not hearing back after submitting an application or after the first round of interviews, but not hearing anything after a second-round interview feels a bit rude. I've already come to terms with not getting the position, but a follow-up email saying something like, "We have decided to move forward with another applicant. Thank you for your time," would have been appreciated. This is especially true since the recruiter I spoke with seemed genuinely invested in the interview process and the applicants.
- Can you share an instance when you had to deal with a challenging customer?
Customer Service Associate
So you get a call about 2 days to a week ahead to set up the interview. They just wanna get to know you a little and ask about your interest in the job. When you get there, you tell the person at the customer service desk you're there for an interview. They'll get the manager on duty to let them know, and then you wait nearby while the manager comes to get you. You'll chat a bit as you walk to their office or backroom, where you'll sit down and interview with up to 3 managers, whoever's around and who they're hiring for. It could take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour, depending on your answers and the job.
- What's a skill you're really proud of?
