I had about 5 interviews for the Portfolio Analyst role. There was an Excel test where I had to create loan payment schedules using mortgage rates. I interviewed with the SVP and Chief Investment Officer, but after the final interview, I never heard back.

I was contacted by a recruiter via LinkedIn for this role. Although I felt I was overqualified, the opportunity seemed promising. The interview process started with a call with the recruiter, followed by a second call with the Chief Product Officer. The subsequent stage was quite extensive; it involved a 1.5-hour drive for back-to-back interviews from 9:30 AM to 12 PM. The interviewers were all very pleasant and professional. One even mentioned that my qualifications made it challenging to find questions to ask. Despite everything going very well and receiving positive feedback, I was unexpectedly declined for the position, with the reason given being that I was too junior, which was quite contradictory to being overqualified. This felt rather insulting, especially since I had explained that I was seeking career growth and they had initially suggested hiring me as a Business Analyst, a role I previously held 7 years ago. They didn't even contact my references, which added to the confusion.

I applied and heard back about a week later for a Zoom interview with two managers. It was a fairly short interview where they asked a lot about my experience and how it related to the role. The manager was really probing, and it felt like they were looking for specific answers even though my resume clearly detailed my relevant experience at a major bank. It gave the impression my skills weren't a good match, which was confusing. I was told I'd hear back in 1-2 weeks, but never did, even after following up. It was unprofessional that a big company like BankUnited didn't even send an email to say they'd moved on. I also found it confusing that the job was listed as remote, but the manager said it was only remote 'for now.' The Miami Lakes office is a significant commute, and I wouldn't have applied if office visits were required or if the temporary remote nature due to COVID-19 wasn't clearly stated. A clear disclosure about potential office visits would have saved time. While I appreciate the opportunity, it was a negative experience, and I'm not sure I'd re-apply.

Had a conversation with HR, it was pleasant and not difficult. Then, a Zoom interview with the department manager. It was a pleasant and professional conversation where they asked about my experience, not in an interrogation style. After that, I spoke with their boss, a VP. It was a pleasant conversation, similar to the first interview. At the end, he said I'd definitely hear something in a few days. I think they were concerned I was overqualified because I heard nothing for a few days. I reached out to HR and was told they were still interviewing other candidates. I reached out a few more times over the following weeks, and got the same answer. I never got an official rejection, but I don't need one - it's assumed. I was initially disappointed, but I'm actually grateful this happened. A larger, nationally known company offered me a similar position. My advice to those interviewing, like I was: if you hear the phrase 'you'll definitely hear something in a few days' - don't be so certain until you have that offer letter! =)
