Getting hired isn't always fast or simple; the interview process can take a while. It's rare these days to interview once and get an offer. Many companies have a detailed interview process, beginning with screening interviews, usually over the phone. Then come in-person interviews, followed by second and even third interviews. You might talk with a hiring manager, other managers, employees, and staff. How it all works depends on the company and their hiring systems. Here's a look at each interview stage and how to handle it as you move towards a job offer. A screening interview checks if you have the basic qualifications for the job. It's often the first step, unless the company does open hiring events. Phone interviews help employers find and attract candidates, often narrowing down the pool for in-person interviews. For remote roles, phone, Skype, or video interviews might be the way you get hired. The first in-person interview is usually a one-on-one with the hiring manager, covering your experience, skills, work history, availability, and the qualifications they're looking for. A second interview could be a deeper one-on-one or a full day of meetings with various company staff, management, and executives. If you're scheduled for a second interview, you're likely a serious contender. You might think you're done after the first or second interview, but there could be a third or even more interviews. A third interview is typically a final meeting with the hiring manager, and might involve meeting more potential colleagues. Employers sometimes use lunch or dinner interviews to assess your communication and interpersonal skills in a relaxed setting. The final interview is the last stage where you might learn about a job offer. It's important to prepare for interviews at every step and have questions ready. Even though it's a lot of work, especially after multiple interviews, following up after each stage is crucial. Reiterate your interest and thank the interviewer. You might get a job offer pending a background or credit check, or the check might happen before the offer. Findings from the background check could prevent you from getting an offer or lead to a withdrawn offer. Once you've navigated the demanding interview process, the final step is the job offer. Before accepting, evaluate the compensation, consider a counter offer, and then formally accept or decline in writing.
