The principal seemed a bit uninformed about my background. There was an unexpected 'show me what you got' request with students during the interview. It's important to research the school you're interviewing with and get multiple opinions. The interview was okay; as a first-year teacher, you don't know what to expect, but they asked normal job questions and I was asked to present my skills unexpectedly.

I got the job because I was with Teach for America. The principal asked me about after-school plans with students and what clubs I could lead. We also talked a lot about how to deal with other teachers and staff, and making sure I knew who was in charge. It's important to know you're working in a city school with kids who have tough home lives. If you get that and how it impacts teaching, you'll be good.

For the teacher role, most schools require a demo lesson and sample lesson plans. Some principals might ask for a video of a lesson or a student work portfolio to show you're a good teacher. After the demo lesson, I had an interview with the principal and mentor teachers for the open positions in different grades.
