I sent in my application on the company's career page and was contacted fairly quickly by a principal engineer. They seemed really interested in my experience. I set up a Microsoft Teams meeting. The conversation was pretty laid back and seemed to go okay, though I might have shared more than I needed to. The interviewer mentioned they wanted me to chat with a colleague. After three days passed with no word, I reached out to the interviewer, but they never replied. The next day, I got a standard rejection email. I get that they were probably talking to other people, but it would have been nice if they'd said something to manage my expectations instead of pretending to be enthusiastic.
I was led to believe I was applying for a mid-level Systems Engineer role, but it became clear during the interview that they were actually assessing me for a senior position. I suspect I was brought in to meet a diversity quota for a senior role, and I felt like a disposable candidate for that purpose.
I talked to a recruiter for about 30 minutes and they said I'd move to the next round, which was with the hiring manager. They sent me some times, and I replied fast. I didn't hear back for a couple of weeks, so I sent a follow-up email. They sent me more time slots. A few days after I replied to those, I got an automated email saying I didn't get the job.
